![]() ![]() At the end of World War II, Czechoslovakia was re-established as an independent country. Nevertheless, local fascist parties gradually came to power in the Slovak lands, and the first Slovak Republic existed during World War II as a partially-recognised client state of Nazi Germany. It was the only country in central and eastern Europe to remain a democracy during the interwar period. Īfter World War I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the state of Czechoslovakia was established. The area was recovered largely thanks to Béla IV of Hungary, who also settled Germans, leading them to become an important ethnic group in the area, especially in what are today parts of central and eastern Slovakia. In 12, after the Mongol invasion of Europe, much of the territory was destroyed. In the 10th century, after the dissolution of Great Moravia, the territory was integrated into the Principality of Hungary, which then became the Kingdom of Hungary in 1000. In the ninth century, they established the Principality of Nitra, which was later conquered by the Principality of Moravia to establish Great Moravia. In the seventh century, they played a significant role in the creation of Samo's Empire. The Slavs arrived in the territory of present-day Slovakia in the fifth and sixth centuries. The capital and largest city is Bratislava, while the second largest city is Košice. Slovakia's mostly mountainous territory spans about 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 sq mi), with a population of over 5.4 million. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest, and the Czech Republic to the northwest. In Slovakia, the EIT is strongly represented as well with the country being the home base for numerous hubs of the so-called EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS), which aims at boosting the innovation capabilities of the RIS eligible countries by strengthening linkages among key innovation actors. Since 2022, Vienna hosts EIT Health’s newly founded Innovation Hub Austria, and it will also be the home of a Co-Location Center of the recently launched EIT Culture & Creativity. In 2020, the first Austrian branch of the EIT, the Co-Location Center East of EIT Manufacturing, was established in Vienna, fostering the country’s manufacturing industry in the EIT network. Since 2015, EIT RawMaterials partners with the RIC (Resources Innovation Center) Leoben, which acts as the KICs regional center for East and South-East Europe through outreach, integration and community building activities. ![]() Many of the EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities are strongly represented in the EU member countries Austria and Slovakia. Participation in the EIT KICs’ activities leads to increased innovation efforts in various industries and drives societal prosperity in Europe, enhancing competitiveness, sustainable growth as well as the creation of jobs. The EIT KICs follow a pan-European approach, connecting business, education, and research, while at the same time establishing regional innovation hubs to ensure proximity and close collaboration with the local industry ecosystems. Since 2008, the EIT has established nine Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) tackling the most pressing challenges of our time in various industries. It is an integral part of Horizon Europe, the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation.
